@nationaltv.com: The silence of today should not make us forget the outrage of 2012. When fuel increased from ₦65 to ₦141 per litre under the Jonathan administration, Nigerians took to the streets in their thousands. Roads were blocked, businesses were shut down, and the Occupy Nigeria movement became a major national protest. Many of the political actors who supported or participated in those protests were members of the opposition at the time. Today, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC, Nigerians are facing fuel prices that are many times higher than the ₦141 that generated nationwide protests in 2012. Yet the streets are comparatively quiet. That contrast raises a legitimate question: was the principle really about the welfare of Nigerians, or was it about who controlled political power? This is where the APC deserves to be held accountable. A political party cannot condemn a policy when it is in opposition, mobilise Nigerians against it, and then implement an even more painful version of that policy once it gains power—without explaining that contradiction to the people. If subsidy removal was wrong when Jonathan did it, Nigerians deserve to know why it suddenly became acceptable when the APC came to power. This is also why Nigerians should be cautious about trusting political promises from the APC. The problem is not simply that politicians change policies; governments sometimes have to change policies when circumstances change. The problem is the apparent double standard—condemning something in opposition and defending it in government. That makes it difficult for ordinary Nigerians to know whether political parties are genuinely fighting for the people or simply fighting for power. Nigeria does not belong to APC, PDP, Labour or any other political party. Nigerians should not defend or attack a policy simply because their preferred politician supports it. The standard should be the same for everyone: Does this policy improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians? Is government being honest about its consequences? And would the politicians defending it today have defended the same policy if they were sitting in opposition? The lesson from 2012 should therefore not be “support the opposition.” It should be: hold every government accountable. If ₦141 per litre was enough to bring Nigerians into the streets in 2012, Nigerians are entitled to ask why dramatically higher prices today have not produced the same reaction. The question is no longer APC versus PDP. The question is whether Nigerian politicians can be trusted when they move from opposition to government. #tinubu #apc #pmb #nigeria #trending
