Light is much faster than sound because they are completely different types of waves and travel in different ways. **Light is an electromagnetic wave**, while **sound is a mechanical wave**. Light can travel through empty space, but sound needs a substance, called a **medium**, to travel through. This medium can be air, water, or a solid material.
Light travels at an incredibly high speed. In a vacuum, light travels at approximately **300,000 kilometres per second**. This means that light could travel around the Earth more than seven times in just one second! Light does not need particles to carry its energy because electromagnetic waves can travel through empty space.
Sound is much slower because it is produced by **vibrations**. When something makes a sound, it causes nearby particles in the surrounding material to vibrate. These particles then make other particles vibrate, passing the sound energy from one place to another. For example, when you speak, your vocal cords vibrate and create vibrations in the air. These vibrations travel through the air until they reach another person's ears. Because sound depends on particles passing the vibration along, it cannot travel through a vacuum where there are no particles.
We can easily observe the difference between the speeds of light and sound during a **thunderstorm**. When lightning flashes, we see the light almost immediately, but we hear the thunder several seconds later. This is because the light from the lightning travels to our eyes extremely quickly, while the sound of the thunder takes longer to travel through the air.
Sound can travel faster through solids than through air because the particles in solids are packed closely together, allowing vibrations to pass between them more easily. However, even in solids, sound is still enormously slower than light. For example, sound travels through air at about **343 metres per second**, while light travels at about **300,000,000 metres per second**.
Therefore, light is faster than sound because light does not need a medium and can travel at an extremely high speed, whereas sound depends on the movement of particles in a medium
