my first day off orientation (on medsurg with a 1:6 ration) i had a patient on trach, a chest tube, 2 patients that needed more than 1 unit of prbc's, and a CBI running wide open that kept clotting :)

No, I get it. Best to get it done while there are still more experienced nurses on the unit to help you out if you need it before YOU become the experienced nurse 😂

Umm, no. As an experienced nurse, you set ppl up for success w/ reasonable challenges not to sink for both the new grad and patient’s safety! Unless, you can help out w/ the patient.

nah i think it's better to ease them into it. it's a new environment, let them get used to having their own assignment and doing a couple shifts on their own and figuring out their pace. it's just common courtesy

They tell us they do this on orientation and honestly, I feel bad for my preceptor 😭 for one singular dollar more an hour she/he has to get the most heinously complex cases while also trying to make sure I don’t do anything dumb and maybe learn something

First day off of orientation: got split between two halls with the most ppl assigned with an admission and a patient with a esophageal fistula with a literal gastric bag hooked up to it that I had to help empty…I cried the entire way home

it’s a pain in the ass but i’ve learned the most from the most complex patients…now i gotta watch the new grads sink or swim. it truly was a blessing though and im thankful for it now

No thank you ! I didn’t get real icu patients until later on and was super stressed ! Better to do it starting off and get the help from experienced nurses
