Naturally, I’m using an extremely complex topic to bring up another extremely complex topic but here we are! Reality consensus. Reality consensus is the act of aligning you and another person in a shared reality. From the shared reality, we then get a very specific frame on our perspective of ourselves, the other person, and the world. What can be so insidious about betrayals and being on the receiving end of narcissism is that when this person you share a reality with holds an attachment significance that is extremely powerful like a parent or like a romantic partner, they have the power to warp your reality and thus warp your sense of self. They can feed you false information that you incorporate as your identity or they feed you false information and gaslight you into believing something that doesn’t exist. I think it’s very important to note here that whether the betrayal was a means of reckless coping or a narcissistic assault, it was done by choice and repeated choices overtime. i’ve heard many times that the worst part of an affair is the lies. The betrayal results in the loss of the partner, but the violation of reality consensus results in the loss of Self. I think that is why betrayal events are truly so disorienting because your inner and outer world are shattered.
