@antonia_investing: If your child's off to university, here's the number that actually matters — not the loan amount, but the gap you'll likely fill. 🎓 Parents on £65k+ household income are paying an average of £320 a month to top up their child's maintenance loan. We've broken down what parents at different income levels are really paying, so you can plan ahead. This is educational content, not financial advice — everyone's circumstances differ. How does it work if my parents are divorced and I spend the time with them exactly 50-50?

In student finance Wales everyone gets the same maintenance loan (around 12k) your parents income just dictates how much you have to pay back

My parents are in the “Highest Bracket” but barely getting by as we are in the South East and 60k (high bracket) is 2 full time minimum wage workers- they can’t afford to contribute as they have their own bills and mortgage. It’s not really fair, it should be equal opportunity for all students - we have to add it to our student loan anyway. I’m having to work 36 hours per week (most weeks) to cope which is almost full time work as a full time student🤷‍♀️

Joint income of 100k which sounds huge. But actually, with the cost of living and a big mortgage, we are just about okay. It’s like having 2 mortgages now. We are having to pay most of our child’s accommodation and maintenance. It’s going to be a tight 3 years

It’s a bad loan, not a free handout. So I need to make sure my child doesn’t need the loan.

Love that they think that parents will actually help tho. They took my stepdads income into account because he lives with my mom and he has never once given me any help with my day to day living. But, because he earns a lot per year - my maintenance loan shot down. If it was just taken off of my moms (as it should’ve been) I’d have had the maximum.

Our combined income is more than £80k but we have very little disposable income due to high mortgage payments and other commitments and bills. It’s so unfair that kids loans are mean tested when they have to repay them anyway.

Income just over £60k contributing £320pm? Im paying £750pm just for my daughters rent, as sf just about covers her food, travel, phone and sundries for her course. We still need to bail her out occasionally with extra money. Shes tried to get a job to help out, but just hasnt been successful

So you can claim child benefit if you earn under a certain amount of money but jt stops before university as the child is now an adult. However to go to university they have to provide parental earnings to have a student loan and it’s just expected the parent will top them up. So the parents who were just getting by each month now have lost child benefit and are expected to top up an adult child. It’s just very wrong and unfair. The child also needs a part time job to help keep themselves but they are very thin on the ground and the job has to work around lectures as well,

It's worth mentioning that if your resident parent remarries, that new 'step parent' income is taken into account and they are expected to contribute too even if they have had next to no relationship with the student. The non-resident parent does not have to contribute nor do they have to pay any child maintenance either. There have been students in their 2nd and 3rd years that have had to leave their course due to no longer getting any maintenance loan following their parents new marriage

I was naive as I always believed that university was for everyone and didn’t know that parents had to pay as well. We have 2 kids at university and we are utterly shocked we have to find £600 per month to cope .
