Healthy wetlands regulate water flow, store carbon and support a huge diversity of life. At Ultima Frontiera, @Rewilding Romania is working to bring more natural water dynamics back to the landscape. 💧 The 800-hectare site was once a fish farm, with dykes, sluices and pumps controlling the water. Now, a new hydrological study has identified ways to reconnect the former fish ponds and remove barriers to water movement, creating better conditions for wetlands and wildlife. 🦅 Birds are already returning to the abandoned ponds, including Dalmatian pelicans and other wetland species. The site's hides also attract wildlife photographers, with visits soon bookable through wilderplaces.com 👀 🕯️ The site also holds a difficult history. Nearby Periprava was a forced-labour colony under Romania's former communist regime.
