@katie_kohn_: “Work is one of the most important relationships you’ll have in life.” @sophiesuperfast CEO of The Marketing Society told me that we spend 90,000 hours of our lives at work 😮 As well as being on the mic for my own world of work, I’m also training for my diploma in transformative life coaching, and I often speak to clients who are feeling stuck in their careers and unsure how to move forwards. So… I asked Sophie a question that many of us have faced, or probably will at some point: what advice would she give to someone who isn’t loving their job right now? And her answer was bloomin’ brilliant. It came down to 3 main things: 1. Understand what you want, communicate that and shape your work where you can.
2. Find your fuel. What gives you purpose? What energises and inspires you?
3. Recognise that your relationship with work is a long-term one. As Sophie puts it, she’s had times when her relationship with work has been “toxic”, and others when it’s been “incredible” and she’s been “terribly in love”. This one really resonated with me. This time last year, I pivoted my own career after 8 years working in-house at TikTok and LADbible, taking the leap to pursue my ultimate career aspiration of becoming a presenter and interviewer. Since then, I’ve also added another purpose-filled string to my bow and started training as a life coach. And one deceptively simple question comes up again and again: “What do you want?” It’s often one of the hardest questions to answer. But understanding what you actually want can be a HUGE first step. Then comes finding your reason why, and recognising that Rome wasn’t built in a day… very much like your career!
