The disaster occurred at the al-Zara gold mine near the town of al-Nuhud, a remote area currently controlled by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Survivors told AFP that several mine shafts collapsed, trapping workers beneath large amounts of soil and rubble. Search operations were continuing Wednesday, and the medical group warned that the death toll could rise because people remained missing. One survivor described the collapse as massive and said rescuers lacked the heavy machinery necessary to quickly remove the debris. Initial accounts differed slightly: Reuters⁠ reported at least 60 deaths, citing two local sources, while the Associated Press⁠ later placed the toll at 67 based on information from survivors and a medical organization.
