"why did she trust unalaq, he was obviously evil" CHARACTERS IN SHOWS DON'T HEAR THE EVIL MUSIC AND DON'T SEE THE EVIL SHADOWS

The next thing many people don't understand, Korra literally was isolated from the world since early childhood only knowing the reality her teachers and parents told her about, which was literally completely different because the whole world has changed, bending style, technic, jobs and so on. Especially her choices and actions in the first season are due to the simple fact she encounters everything the first time.

Korra's no 1 defender :
No because they are misogynistic and victim blamers. Aang has canonically made worse decisions but they don't say anything because he's a man. Zuko has made bad decisions but the fandom is filled with boy moms. This is the very reason why Katara being mean to Sokka is unforgivable because women should be perfect and never make mistakes. That's why they tend to like Toph, Suki and Ty Lee who practically haven't made a decision to affect anything

Wrong cus her dad and some of the northern tribe plus verrick told her why he’s evil and was still slow on the uptake

“First one to realize he was evil” that’s a flat out lie, they were in a civil war before Korra started to notice anything was fishy.

I don't understand how people get so wrapped up in protagonists NEEDING to always make the right choice. characters can make mistakes or be deceived, their choices can have cataclysmic effects despite the best intentions. People are flawed, and part of storytelling is how the characters react to their own failures.

Avatar wan seals the spirits away because they couldn't get along with humans and vise versa. Korra, " i know, let me open up the portal and have two separate entities come together again, even though they almost slaughtered each other. oh and let's not have the humans or the spirits get accustomed to each other first, release them all other city, yeah, that should be god for society. let me bail right after and see what happens" [Tears of joy]

She has the opposite of plot armor and tlok is a show that does not hold back when it comes to it’s characters facing the consequences of their actions, atla had many plot armor moments that helped the hero’s succeed despite sometimes making questionable choices that’s not the case with tlok but people apply the same logic as atla onto tlok when even tho they are the same universe they are drastically different shows

The question I like to ask haters (to which I’ve never gotten an answer) is coming out of the meeting in S2E3, what was the correct thing Korra should’ve done that she didn’t do? That was the first actual time she received any warning about Unalaq (though it was from Varrick who was a stranger and clearly self-interested) and her father asked her to talk to Unalaq and share their concerns. They criticize her in S1 for being too hot headed and aggressive, and not listening to her mentors and friends. But the way they talk about S2 it seems like they expect her to custom Unalaq from the jump, despite what anyone else says, because he’s “clearly evil”. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

this is why dramatic irony doesn't really work as a narrative story telling device. if we already know more than the characters then it's gonna be hard to be sympathetic towards them when they make poor decisions. if the plot only happens cause of contrivances then it's no wonder people will feel frustrated
