President Donald Trump unexpectedly called NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang while Huang was speaking on stage at the All In Summit in Los Angeles, turning a technology discussion into a live conversation about the future of artificial intelligence.
Huang put Trump on speakerphone so the audience could hear the exchange. Trump dismissed fears that robots or AI could take over the world as a hoax and argued that data centers will be a major source of economic power for the United States. Huang responded that America would continue pushing forward in the AI race.
The call came as the technology industry was debating whether the development of advanced AI should slow down to allow safety measures and outside evaluation to catch up. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had called for the industry to pace frontier AI development, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk expressed support for the broader call for greater caution.
The debate also reached financial markets. NVIDIA shares fell about 3.4 percent on September 14 as semiconductor stocks declined amid concerns about a slower AI development cycle.
