@sandwichgenerationmom: Placing your parent in assisted living might be the best option for YOU #sandwichgeneration #assistedliving #boomer #aging #caregivers
I thank god every day that my mother had the $2 million to pay for her care through her last 9 years of life. There was no way my brothers or I could have done it. But it did cost $2 million and that was 10 years ago, so someone better save the money

As long as you’d be comfortable getting the same treatment if/when you are in their position one day - then seems like a fair deal.

if my mom with dementia were to live w my family, my life would change completely overnight. i have 2 active kids in sports, activities, full and active friendships. my inlaws, who i love, live out of town and come visit often, and we visit them often. my mom goes to bed at 6pm, wakes up at 3am. she hates other peoples kids-always has. no patience for them. we would have to be quiet after 6pm. she would be up wandering at 3am in my home. i wouldn't be able to host family (she doesnt like husbands family that much, and hates my deceased fathers extended family). i certainly wont be able to leave on a vacation ever again. Its 24 hours a day to care for a stubborn adult. she still refuses assisted living- she literally doesnt care that itll ruin my life and affect my childrens lives. she just wont do it. im at my wits end

Cannot share this message enough. Not everyone is able to be a caregiver and that's fine.
I wish more people knew and believed this before they burnt out

The hospital told me that I would not be able to care for my father, as his dementia progressed. They were correct. He became physically disabled. There would have been no way I would have been able to lift him. He became combative. And our house was not set up for him to live with us. But I felt guilty all the time.

You can go back to being their son/daughter. It is a wonderful feeling to have your mom/dad instead of patient

It’s the best thing because how can you care for someone 24/7 and still work or have your own life. Thank God my husbands mom is in one

it's so nice to be able to have social visits instead of having to do all those care tasks! And knowing that someone will be right there if she falls; it's great peace of mind

I tried to have my dadive with me. however., I'm on the top floor of an apartment complex and he can barely walk. He has lived here before he got really bad, but I know the one thing he will remember is the corner store across the street to buy booze from. he PHYSICALLY cannot handle the stairs any more and would 100℅ just go toppling down
trying to get to alcohol. he is the safest in a home.

Exactly! I’m so damned tired. I don’t have the option of using assisted living for my mom at this point. Between my mom and my daughter I have NOTHING left.

It is the next level of people judging you if you choose to put your kids into daycare. We really have to stop shoulding on people.

I'm thinking of one particular family online caring for a "grandma" and their day to day sounds exhausting. No one HAS to continue caring when there are options. You haven't failed.

I totally agree with you. I am one now for my dad who is 99. I choose to take care of him but it is so overwhelming !!! It’s the hardest thing I have ever done. I’m 72 and am exhausted. There is nothing wrong with putting them somewhere. Thank you for your videos, I really enjoy them.

I'm noticing that you twice mentioned "putting your loved one in assisted living." The cultural norms are so strong that we've unwittingly picked up language that casts the adult children as perpetrators and the elderly parents as victims.
You and your mother made a decision to transition her from a house she couldn't manage to a place where she could get extra support she needs at this stage of her life. Perhaps she disagreed with it (I've tried to watch lots of your videos because it's such a compelling and authentic journey you're sharing, but I cannot recall how the idea of assisted living came up or was received -- apologies for any incorrect assumptions on my party). But ultimately she agreed to move there and she did move there. That's not "putting her" anywhere.
Maybe we can all find more graceful ways of talking about this transition that doesn't require anyone to be the bad guy. 🫶🫂

After watching my parents for two years, 187 197. I told the physician I was gonna put my 97 year-old dad in the assisted living and she was very upset. Basically she said he will die and in three months he did but it is what it is.

Yes, Yes to all of this. We went through it 4 times, dad, mom,MIL and FIL. We lost 20 years of freedom, they are cared for and for the most part, safe. You deserve a life too.

I’m sorry. But my dad has done nothing but suck the living life out of me. I definitely don’t want to put the same type of burden on my children.

it's also worth noting that, in healthy relationships, utilizing help from those with more experience (ie, paid caregivers) relieves a lot of stress and allows people to enjoy the time they have with loved ones.
