An Alabama mother will spend the rest of her life behind bars after admitting she left her newborn son in a dumpster equipped with a trash compactor. Jakayla Ashanti Williams, 21, was sentenced Monday by Houston County Circuit Judge Henry D. Binford to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentence came after Williams accepted a last-minute deal to avoid the possibility of the death penalty. Just moments before jury selection was scheduled to begin, Williams pleaded guilty to one count of capital m*rder. The case dates back to August 2023, when Williams was 18 and secretly gave birth at her home in Dothan, Alabama. Shortly afterward, she told family members that she had surrendered the baby to a “red-headed” employee at Southeast Health Medical Center. But investigators quickly found problems with her story. Days after the birth, Williams went to the hospital with a family member and claimed she was trying to find her newborn. Hospital staff contacted police, who reviewed surveillance footage after Williams gave them a vague description of the alleged employee. The footage showed no employee matching her description — and investigators found no evidence that Williams had even been at the hospital after giving birth. Police questioned Williams again, and she eventually admitted that she had left the newborn in a dumpster at an apartment complex near her home. The dumpster’s contents were later transported to a Dothan landfill, where investigators recovered the infant’s remains. Police said the baby had been wrapped in a mattress protector and placed inside a zipped duffel bag. At the time, Williams reportedly told investigators she did not want to be a mother at 18 and that having a baby “cost too much money.” Prosecutors charged her with capital m*rder and announced they would seek the death penalty. Her defense challenged the state’s claim that the baby was alive when Williams placed him in the dumpster. Her attorneys also emphasized that Williams was only 18, had no prior criminal record and was seeking mental-health treatment. The case remained pending for years as her lawyers pursued a mental-health defense and argued that her age and emotional condition should be considered as mitigating factors. “I’m shocked this is the case they chose to seek the death penalty,” defense attorney Aimee Cobb previously told local media. The tragedy also prompted Dothan officials to take action. In October 2023, city officials voted to bring a Safe Haven Baby Box to the city, allowing mothers to safely and anonymously surrender newborns under Alabama’s Safe Haven law.
