If I ever have the opportunity to go on the Drew Barrymore Show, do I have to put my feet on the couch?

My almost 13 year old son recently, when being told to clean his room, said- “I really want to talk back right now but I know it won’t end well!” I thought to myself, hm, maybe I did something right here…

Something happens at age 15 (at least it did for both my son and daughter), be it their hormones or time in life and school (grade 10/11), something about becoming and adult, etc. the struggle is real around this age and I feel it was my job to guide them the best I could while still allowing them to make (healthy) mistakes and learn from them. It was hard but they (and you will) get past it and it gets better. 🥰

The best advice I’ve seen is to remember it is hard for them too. Being a teenager is a difficult period of transition and they are doing it for the first time too.

Best advice I can give you is listen to them. Teenagers often state nobody listens to them, be the one who listens without judgement and you will do great!

Be honest, accept that they learn not from mistakes, but the consequences from those mistakes, and give them options, not just putting your foot down "it's your way or the highway"...let them present their options to you, you still have the final say...

Really? Y'all had to wait until your children were teenagers before they started refusing your advice. My 8-year-old is doing this now[Crying]

my mom always has said you raise your children until 15 and then after that it is more guidance and hope you've taught them well

I found that the only fight I had with my teenager was that they did well in school, but that rule started when they started grade school. I was just there without any judgement. I figured if they did well in school everything else would fall in to place. I would also remind them when they left my car to remember trouble by association- another thing we talked about since they were little. I loved and hugged them the rest of the time. I had a few issues along the way (my daughter quietly lost her door for one month) Now, they are both in their 30’s now and amazing parents themselves - always proud and told them this and still tell them. You have to remember that teenage years are about 5 years out of the 60 plus years we get to spend with them. Only fight the battles you are gonna win, don’t sweat the rest. My kids also knew that if I was fighting for something I would get it because I asked very little of them. They were honour roll high school graduates and both went off to school - one graduated university the other graduated college. Very proud momma here and they still feel unconditional love from me.

At 15 their brain feels like it goes “offline” while it goes through a major reconstruction process. Seriously. It’s unbelievable what their brain goes through making you question your sanity. Not all bad just baffling!!
