Cheryl Tatano Beck wrote an incredible book on this exact topic. It’s titled something like ‘how to build a program of research in nursing’ but it could honestly guide anyone in social sciences. She uses her long program that led to new assessments and interventions for postpartum depression as a case study of sorts

huh... so I'm in an MPA program and just this summer did a case study for a seminar on topic X, this was something I had identified as a way into understanding an answer I would need to know for what I plan on doing for my capstone next summer that is basically "how can we leverage what we learned were the levers of change in X, but for this other (related) policy in this state (and the larger region... and then maybe nationally)". I don't/didn't really have an academic background or upbringing and the natural supports that come with such (though I'm building one now)... did I bumble my way into a research agenda? I'm already driving my wife bonkers brainstorming how I think I could then spin these projects out into a DPP for an EdD 🤣
