Thank you so much for loving and supporting Esteban. We still do not know why he is blind, but I do have an update to share. We had his ophthalmology appointment today. His eye exam was almost entirely normal: no signs of injury or trauma, normal pupillary light reflex, normal pressure, normal anatomy. The only abnormalities are that his pupils are inappropriately dilated as a baseline, and…he is definitely non-visual. When a kitten has normal eyes but no vision, it is called “central blindness,” and as we suspected, he will need to see the neurologist. They do not believe he was born blind as these kittens typically have wandering nystagmus, and he does not. Thankfully we have a consult with the neurologist set for this week, and more bloodwork out now. Unfortunately at this size we can only safely take a small amount of blood, so the specialists are having to make careful decisions; this is just the nature of working with tiny patients. I’m grateful that we at least now know this is not an ocular case, so we can pursue further diagnostics with neurology. But I will continue to be really stressed about this case until we have more answers. In this post you can see photos of him at the ophthalmologist.
