@joseiswriting: @jokoy's latest comedy special, "Blue in the Face," is available to stream today on Netflix. Shout-out to him for taping it in Stockton, California, home to the largest population of Filipinos outside of the Philippines from the 1920s to the 1960s. Much of the birth of Filipino American history happened in Stockton. Young Filipino migrants who came to America for work became the primary agricultural workforce in California's Central Valley. In Stockton, they built Little Manila, a community and refuge from hate, racist public policy, and stifling poverty. Says Jo: "[Filipino] migrants faced a lot and dealt with a lot of racism. But that's not going to be repeated anymore. We sold out an arena, and behind me [during this show] is the Filipino sun." Today, Filipinos remain the largest Asian American group in Stockton, where Asian Americans are the second largest slice of its population, behind only Hispanic or Latino Americans. #jokoy #stockton #filipinos #comedy #netflix
