I had an ex at age 37 who did not have any emergency savings or retirement or worldly possessions. He loved bombing moved in, I lost my job and I went into $20,000 of debt looking for a job for a year, he never once paid electricity, Internet, or for laundry. Often late on his portion of the rent for the house that I owned. When my HOA required an electrical box replacement and a separate special assessment worth more than $14,000 he didn’t wanna help. when my dog needed an x-ray and was soon discovered that he had advanced cancer, he refused to help with the $500 pay because I had previously told him that I was trying to build a life, and if he couldn’t contribute that everything I owned was ultimately mine and not his. I owned my own car which he damaged and I owned my own home and have a total retirement and savings plan in place. I begged him for three years to start saving for retirement instead of spending his money at the bar. He was shocked when I dumped him. The man could not give a crap until all of a sudden he had to step up for himself, because he never once stepped up for me.

My sister bought her first car at 18 and her boyfriend cried he had to play basketball with his friends after work and needed transportation. He guilt tripped her so bad, she walked 3 miles everyday to work, sun and snow and her boyfriend took her car to his little basketballs games with his friends every day. 🙄

My ex bought whatever he wanted because he expected me to work extra to pay for it. Left the marriage with a pile of debt. Paid all that off and have savings now for the first time ever.
