100%. My girls are a little quirky but considered ‘cool’ purely because they have cool things and are nice kids.

‘Fitting in’ is literally a basic human need. I don’t understand the parents with a chip on their shoulder who refuse to acknowledge that being well liked is important.

My son has level 3 ASD & is 99% non conversational. His is considered a profound disability. You better believe my boy is dressed in all Zara Kids, has a trendy haircut, wears nice shoes & has a cool backpack. Every year he is voted Best Dressed by the staff. My son is worthy of it!!

Another tip, especially if your kid is younger, is to get involved with the school and other parents. If you can become friends with parents at their school it can go a long way.

This is all so hard to hear, given how much we are supposed to “be ourselves” and of course encourage that. But the reality for a kiddo on the spectrum is very different, and as much as it is a challenging concept to approach, these transparent conversations are so important and helpful.

As a Mama to an almost 8 year old with ASD, she is ALWAYS dressed nicely, hair done & in cute clothes. It feels like I'm being shallow and kids might still talk about other things but no one is going to pick on her about her appearance. 🤷🏿‍♀️

The best friends I had (and still am friends with) are also autistic and adhd. I didn’t want to “fit in” with popular fakers, I was happy fitting in with the other “weird kids”

My son is neurodivergent and speech delayed and I make sure he’s always stylish and well groomed. It’s hard enough for him as it is I don’t want to make something else worse for him

It's all about reducing targets. I can't make my son neurotypical, and I wouldn't want to! But I can make sure he's tidy, on trend, smells nice, is helpful, etc. He will always be autistic and possibly always nonspeaking, but he'll never be unkempt, smelly, or purposely rude.

I wish when I was a kid my mom would have known I was neurodivergent. I remember not understanding social cues or getting them wrong. We grew up on the lesser side and never had the cool new clothes or things. I really believe if I had better guidance as a kid I would have made better choices with friend groups. I really know that feeling of not fitting in and ending up hanging out with the misfits and kids who didnt make great choices. Glad I am now able to understand what the signs looks like, I believe my 6 yr old daughter is somewhere on the neurodivergent spectrum probably similar to me or my sister. I really try to encourage the “better” friendships I see with her. I have been thinking about getting more involved with school. Thankfully we have a decent friend group with kids around her age (though I know that doesn’t always translate to them being friends). And getting her involved in extracurricular activities that can help her make friends as well as building life skills,

How would you help your elementary school age daughter (specifically around the ages 6-9) navigate around a “friend” that isn’t a friend and bully’s her, but she doesn’t see it and her “friend” intentionally isolates her from everyone because the friend has no friends.

The clothes part is SO true. Some kids need to be nudged in the right direction. In middle school I wasn't trying to be different, I desperately wanted to fit in, I just didn't pick up yet that there had been a huge style shift from elementary school. I was a late bloomer physically and socially and I feel like it should have been quite obvious to my mom that I was struggling to fit in. Once I realized what was happening, it was very hard to convince her to let me get a few trendy items and to stop shopping in the little girls department (we could afford it). But guess what? It really helped my confidence and I became much happier and loved school again. It would have been great if my mom had been an ally and could maybe see things I didn't rather than being an obstacle.

I wish other parents would also just teach their kids more kindness and personality and I wish more. Parents would also put it more effort into making sure their kids look presentable. They're physically active they dressed well they understand social cues and I wish schools also offered maybe classes or personalcare and social development side classes for people who needed it in private like a teacher recognizes the kid is a little bit like the odd one out maybe just helping them fit in in different ways.

“Other kids target differences” is so true! It’s also why I say some adults graduate high school physically but not mentally because even in adulthood I’ve experienced the severity of being picked on at work or just existing in the world for being different. As a woman, I’ve learned how to use my looks and special interests to actually mask and fit in as best I can 🥹💗

When I worked as a psych NP with kids I only truly considered medications in the very young kids (under 8) if they were having issues with peers. Because if they are having peer related issues that young, they are going to be much worse once they reach middle school age.

Love love love all of your videos! I’m working on looking into some kinda sport/physical activity for my 6yr old autistic son. Even if he doesn’t like it, I truly think he’ll benefit from being exposed to new and challenging things, and we can always try something else at the end of it! He’s SO smart and so motivated when he learns new things, but physical activity has been a little hard for us to navigate. Any advice?

100% I completely agree w everything you say and have felt the same for a while with my children. yes I validate my kids. work on their interests with them and I want them to be themselves however I do not allow what I consider to be standard rules to go by the wayside. I want my kids to fit in and be liked because that is a huge part of growing up and having a successful outlook on life. this is never in the absence of being kind, caring, helpful etc.

Thank you so much for this! Just put our daughter on fluoxetine and was torn but ultimately it’s there to help her get through those tough times. She’s on her 6th week and we can already see some improvement in her happiness and less anxiety.
