@autism_mom_life: Something as basic as taking a shower can be a HUGE task for Cash. There are so many individual steps involved—getting in, washing each part of his body, rinsing, shampooing, rinsing again, and knowing when each step is finished. Right now, Cash needs verbal prompting and hand-over-hand assistance to help him work through those steps. I’m not doing it for him—I’m helping him learn how to do it. With significant autism and intellectual disability, skills that may seem automatic to someone else can require years of teaching, repetition, prompting, and patience. Our goal is always progress toward independence, even if that progress looks different than what people expect.
