The US basing model survived the Cold War, two Gulf Wars, and 9/11. The Iran conflict may be what finally breaks it. For decades, hosting American forces came with an unspoken deal: you provide the land, the US provides the deterrence. That deal is now visibly fraying — and not because of anything the host nations did. Every #GulfState hosting US forces was struck following Iran's retaliatory attacks on 28 February 2026. #Bahrain, #Kuwait, #Qatar, and the #UAE were all targeted — not because they participated in the strikes on Iran, but because they provided the infrastructure that made those strikes possible. #Oman was the sole exception, and only because its foreign minister had been actively mediating nuclear talks with Washington. That distinction matters enormously. Tehran did not hit randomly. It hit strategically — and the message was deliberate: #hostingisparticipating. This is a fundamental shift in how military basing liability is calculated. During the Cold War, US bases were considered stabilising. Host nations accepted some political risk in exchange for a security umbrella that was largely credible. What the 2026 conflict exposed is that the umbrella now comes with conditions — and the host nation absorbs the first strike regardless. The #GermanChancellor Friedrich #Merz did not block base access. He did not refuse to host US forces. He criticised US handling of the conflict in a speech at a domestic event in the Sauerland — and Washington responded by announcing the withdrawal of 5,000 troops and cancelling a planned deployment of long-range missiles Germany needs to deter Russia. Trump later warned cuts would go "a lot further." #Spain faced similar pressure earlier in the conflict cycle. The pattern is consistent: public criticism of US operations, even without any operational interference, is now treated as a breach of the hosting relationship. What that creates is a new informal condition attached to basing agreements — a condition of silence. And that has never been part of any formal #NATO or bilateral #SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) arrangement. #ConsultationRights — the legal or diplomatic obligation to inform and seek input before using another nation's territory for military operations — have historically been treated as courtesies rather than enforceable requirements. Host nations are now watching events unfold in real time and calculating whether that needs to change. The #Greenland question fits directly into this logic. If the US owns the territory outright, there is no host government to consult, no parliament to object, no chancellor to speak at a domestic event. Ownership removes the political variable entirely. It is not simply about Arctic resources or shipping lanes — it is about basing rights without the accountability architecture that comes with sovereign allies. That is a significant strategic realignment. The postwar international order was built on the premise that US power projection required allied consent and that consent was maintained through mutual benefit. What is emerging instead is a model in which the US seeks to reduce its dependence on that consent — either through punishing critics or acquiring territory where no consent is required. For smaller states, the calculation is now genuinely difficult. Hosting US forces no longer guarantees protection from being targeted. Criticising US operations risks losing the forces entirely. And demanding formal consultation rights risks being seen as an unreliable partner. That is not a stable equilibrium. And it will reshape defence planning across #Europe and the #Gulf for years to come.
