@staxrecords: On September 15, 1965, Otis Redding released OTIS BLUE: OTIS REDDING SINGS SOUL, the album that helped push him from rising Southern soul singer to national star. The bulk of OTIS BLUE was recorded during a marathon session at Stax in July 1965. Otis and the musicians reportedly worked from about 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., broke while Booker T. & The M.G.’s played previously scheduled gigs, reconvened around 2 a.m. and kept going until roughly 2 p.m. the following afternoon. Behind Otis were Booker T. & The M.G.’s, Isaac Hayes on piano and members of the Mar-Keys and Memphis horn section. There was “Respect,” “Ole Man Trouble” and the Jerry Butler co-write “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” alongside Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” “Shake” and “Wonderful World,” The Temptations’ “My Girl,” B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby,” William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water” and a full-throttle reinvention of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” That last one came with a great bit of rock-and-soul symmetry. Keith Richards later said Otis’ horn-driven version was actually closer to how he had originally imagined “Satisfaction” before the Stones’ fuzz-guitar recording took shape. The album topped the R&B chart and reached No. 75 on the Billboard 200, giving Otis his first album to cross onto that chart. “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” reached No. 11 on the Hot 100, “Respect” reached No. 35, and “Shake” reached No. 47. Two years later, Aretha Franklin would transform “Respect” again and take the song all the way to No. 1. Even the cover has a little mystery attached to it. The woman pictured on OTIS BLUE came from a licensed stock photograph, and her identity was uncertain for decades. Photographer Peter Sahula later said he believed the model was Dagmar Dreger, though he could not confirm it with absolute certainty.
