@cspanofficial: Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was asked Tuesday how he reconciles his anti-communism views with President Trump's moves for the U.S. government to acquire stakes in private companies and promise $5,000 checks to Americans if Republicans retain control of Congress. "What he's trying to articulate is the obvious truth that is demonstratable — and we can sit here all morning, we can talk to you about that — if you want more money in your pockets, you've got to keep Republicans in charge. That's what the president's talking about," he said, while ignoring the communism comparison. The speaker pointed to Republicans' tax cuts putting more money in people's pockets, as well as their efforts to shrink the size of the government, in contrast to what he says Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) is doing in New York City. "What happens when you grow government? You have to tax more, and they take more of your hard-earned resources.
