Nike forgot its North Star. It built decades of brand equity selling aspiration, then started harvesting that equity through performance marketing instead of continuing to build awareness and the aspiration that made people wear Nike in the first place. When the brand stops making you want to be Jordan, Serena or Tiger, you’re left comparing the actual shoe, and there are better options now. Losing over $220bn in value from its peak shows how quickly that brand equity can disappear.
