Not when Engfa was looking at her with genuine confusion. Ms. Waraha stepped closer. “Engfa…” Engfa looked at her. “This is Charlotte.” Engfa repeated the name softly. “Charlotte?” Charlotte's tears continued falling. Engfa studied her face. Then she asked innocently, “Is she my friend?” Charlotte pressed her lips together. Ms. Waraha nodded carefully. “She was someone very important to you.” Engfa looked at Charlotte again. “Did I know her well?” Charlotte couldn't answer. Lom gently stepped closer. “Very well.” Engfa looked confused. “Then why don't I remember her?” No one spoke. The silence was unbearable. Charlotte finally lowered her head. Because there was no answer that wouldn't hurt. Engfa looked at her again. She noticed the tears running down Charlotte's cheeks. Something inside her suddenly tightened. She touched her chest. “Why is she crying so much?” Charlotte looked up. Engfa continued. “Did she miss me?” That question broke whatever strength Charlotte had left. She covered her mouth and began sobbing again. “Yes.” The word escaped before she could stop herself. “Yes…” Charlotte looked at Engfa through her tears. “I missed you so much.” Engfa stared at her. Something strange happened. Her chest felt heavy. Her heart began beating faster. She didn't understand why. She didn't know this woman. At least… her mind didn't. But something inside her seemed to disagree. Engfa slowly touched her chest again. “Why does it feel…” She paused. “…like I'm supposed to know you?” Charlotte's eyes widened. Hope appeared for only a second. But before she could respond— Engfa suddenly closed her eyes. Her hand went to her head. “Ah…” Lom immediately moved toward her. “Engfa?” The pain came suddenly. Engfa grabbed her head. “It hurts…” Ms. Waraha immediately supported her. “Don't force yourself.” Engfa's breathing became uneven. “I don't know…” She squeezed her eyes shut. “Why can't I remember?” Charlotte instinctively stepped forward. “Engfa—” Ms. Waraha immediately raised her hand. “Charlotte, please.” Charlotte stopped. “Don't come closer yet.” Charlotte's heart broke. She stood there helplessly while Lom helped Engfa sit down. Engfa continued holding her head. The pain slowly began to ease. Ms. Waraha knelt beside her. “Don't think about anything right now.” “But…” “Just breathe.” Engfa followed her mother's instructions. Slowly. Her breathing became steadier. Charlotte stood several feet away. Tears continued falling silently. She had waited almost two years to hold Engfa again. She finally had. But Engfa didn't remember her. Charlotte looked at the woman she loved. Alive. Breathing. Standing in front of her. Yet somehow… still so far away. Engfa opened her eyes. Her gaze found Charlotte again. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. Charlotte gave her a small, trembling smile. She didn't approach. She didn't touch her. She simply stood there. Because if loving Engfa meant waiting again… then she would wait. No matter how long it took. Engfa looked at her quietly. She still couldn't remember. But somewhere deep inside her heart… something had already begun to stir. To be continued…
