I did that in my explorer. Took an hour, and I didn’t take out the wheel, but I didn’t have a blank plate behind my gauge cluster either. Had to use a DEWALT 12 Inch Right Angle Impact Flex Shaft.

My 08 Crown Vic has the same problem. My fix is I park the car during the winter because it won’t switch to heat. They (Auto manufacturers) do this do YOU can’t fix it but they the dealership can and charge you accordingly.
