@ruth.newkirk: Built in 14 months staring Dec. 16, 1930 and finished early 1932, the brainchild of then Gov. Huey P. Long because the existing "Old" capitol building was becoming too small and obselete. The "New" State Capitol was designed by the architectual firm Wiess, Dreyfous and Seiferth. Built on the former campus of Louisiana State University, it sits on a 27 acre tract which includes the Capitol Gardens. This building has been the site of many historical moments and many historical figures have graced it's halls. One of the most tragic events in Louisiana History occured here Sept. 8, 1935 Sen. Huey P. Long was shot in the hall beside what is now The Speaker's Office, he died two day later. He was buried on the grounds with a simple headstone, in 1938 the State Legislature appropiated $50,000 to replace Long's original gravemarker with a more monumental one; two years later, a marble pedestal surmounted by a bronze statue was erected. The Louisiana State Capitol was added to Nation Register of Historic Place June 9, 1972 and was designated a Nation Historic Landmark Dec. 12 1982
