Jennie was standing by the window, arms crossed, watching her. Lisa held up a finger, asking for a second. But Jennie didn't give it to her. "Hang up!" Lisa covered the microphone. "It’ll be quick." "You’ve been quick everywhere else for days—except here. Hang up!" On the other end of the line, someone kept talking. Lisa closed her eyes for a moment and ended the call. "You didn't even look at me before going on." "I was hanging up." "No. You were choosing the call." Lisa set the phone face down on the sofa. "Don't start." "Start what? That I waited for you again? I’ve been like this for hours. Arms crossed, listening to you talk to someone else with a patience you don't give me anymore." "It's my job, Jennie." "And I’m your wife. And for a long time now, this house has felt empty." "You married me knowing what my life was like." "I married you believing it would be different. That one day you’d walk through that door and greet *me*. Not the phone. That we’d have nice moments without you getting calls every five minutes." Lisa took a deep breath. "If I stop answering, my work gets complicated, Jennie." Jennie shook her head, weary. "I know. I’m not asking you to ignore the calls. But you pay more attention to work than to me. I’m always waiting for you. I leave food out. I leave space in the bed. And you walk in asking for a second, like I’m just a break in your schedule." Her voice dropped. "If this is what I was going to live through, I don't know what we were signing up for that day." Lisa stiffened. Fear twisted her expression. "Yeah. I guess so." If this is how I was going to find you every time I came home, I don’t even know why we got married. Jennie looked at her as if the air had been knocked out of her. "That was easy for you to say," Jennie said, her voice low and breaking. "You started it." "I said this doesn't feel like a marriage. You said the marriage was a mistake." "I didn't say..." "You did." Jennie turned and walked toward the door. Lisa caught up to her in two strides and took her arm. "Jennie!" She turned her around and kissed her. It wasn't a kiss meant to win an argument. It was the kiss of someone who had just heard the words that had come out of her own mouth. Lisa cupped her face. Jennie gripped her shirt tightly, still angry. They pulled apart just slightly. "This doesn't erase what you said. Or the fact that you're never around." "What I said a moment ago isn't true. It wasn't true. I got scared. I saw you waiting for me, and I chose to hurt you rather than admit I was late again." Lisa took her hands and stroked them with her thumbs. "I couldn't live without you. Not really. But if you leave because of something I said to hurt you... I don't know what would be left of me. I don't want to lose you. And marrying someone as wonderful as you was never a mistake." Jennie held her cheeks and pulled her close, bringing their faces together. "Then prove it to me. Prove why you married me. Show me that you choose me, not work. That this house is still ours. That your affection goes beyond just an apology."
