@cape.town.audits: 🚨 OTTERY: A MASS SHOOTING HOTSPOT — HOW MUCH MORE CAN THIS COMMUNITY TAKE? 🇿🇦 Ottery has become associated with gangsterism, shootings and murder. Residents are living with the reality of gun violence in their own communities. Parents worry about their children. Innocent people can find themselves caught in the middle of gang violence. 🚨 BUT IF WE ARE REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT FIXING THE PROBLEM, WE HAVE TO GO DEEPER. Yes, we need more effective law enforcement. We need action against illegal firearms, gang activity and those responsible for shootings. But what are we doing to address the conditions that allow these problems to keep growing? UNEMPLOYMENT IS A MAJOR PART OF THE PROBLEM. If we genuinely want to break the cycle, then give the men and young people in these communities REAL OPPORTUNITIES. 💼 Give them jobs. 🛠️ Give them skills. 🎓 Give young people bursaries and training. 🏗️ Put unemployed people to work rebuilding and maintaining their own communities. 💰 Give people a legitimate way to earn an income and provide for their families. Because if we simply send police into these areas after every shooting but do nothing about the lack of jobs, poverty and lack of opportunities, we’re treating the symptoms without addressing the deeper problems. And let’s be clear: Having no job does NOT justify joining a gang or committing murder. People are still responsible for their choices. But if government and communities are serious about preventing the next generation from being pulled into gangsterism, then creating legitimate opportunities has to be part of the solution. Imagine if every young man who was being recruited by a gang had another option: “Here’s a job. Here’s a skill. Here’s a future.” That’s how you start changing communities. 👮 LAW ENFORCEMENT + JOBS + EDUCATION + OPPORTUNITY + ACCOUNTABILITY. We need all of it.
