🔴Saudi Arabia Warns Houthis After Reported Drone Interception Near Mecca 📍Saudi | September 16, 2026 | HewadPress:— Saudi Arabia says its air defenses destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening before it entered the holy city’s restricted airspace, prompting a warning that the protection of Islamic holy sites and pilgrims is a “red line.” Coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said the interception occurred at 6:50 p.m. on September 15. He described it as a second attempt to target Mecca, citing a ballistic missile launch on July 27, 2017, and said coalition forces would take measures to deter further attacks. The Houthis denied targeting Mecca. The interception and alleged target remain attributed to the coalition; the group’s denial was reported by Reuters. Separately, coalition officials said Monday’s Houthi attack on a Saudi air base wounded 13 civilians. The Houthis described that strike as retaliation for Saudi airstrikes in Yemen. The escalation follows Houthi gains at Mokha port and three strategic islands around Bab el-Mandeb, strengthening their ability to threaten Saudi shipping. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo on Tuesday to seek support. Both emphasized maritime security, but announced no specific military measures. Separately, Saudi Arabia blamed an Iran-aligned Iraqi group for the East-West Pipeline attack. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said flows could resume within days; Riyadh provided no restart date. The renewed fighting is also worsening Yemen’s humanitarian crisis. AP reported nearly 94,000 people displaced and, citing the World Health Organization, more than 500 deaths from fighting in the past week.
