There’s such enormous distrust in our system right now, some warranted and some based in troubling beliefs. I think we’ll see a big uptrend in defendants choosing to represent themselves in court. I think in 10 years the “fool for a client” sentiment could lose meaning for many people and not long after that, people won’t even remember the context it was said in in the first place. Adages are sometimes considered “out of date” now.

Interesting theory! I was thinking the same thing, that judge may be contemplating about a mental health issue or just view the defendant in a more “vulnerable” light and possibly let the dude slide with life without parole
