This is why we English in school eventually shifts to literature, so people can question the things they read. Is romeo and juliet really about love or a stalker and his victim? You then question the actions taken by the characters motives, wonder why they did what they did, you as a person form that opinion and share it and not some AI or popular opinion

People don’t realize how gratifying reading is. Besides all the benefits, it is just such an incredible escape. Something like television could never transport me in the same way that a book can. Furthermore, I think people are just losing and appreciation for the humanities in general. It goes well beyond reading. A lot of people are so disconnected from all sorts of time intensive handcrafts, and such. So many people feel empty and lost, and yet they continue to choose lifeless, manufactured things over true human expression. I think there is a movement of people who want to appreciate slow things, but things are a bit troubling at present. Great video!

I'm part of the literacy crisis. I can read, but only at a basic level. I can't understand stuff like other people can, I have to read sentences multiple times to actually know what they're saying. and every time I try to get better I stop because I get bored. I don't know how to fix myself and sometimes I don't want to, because I'm so comfortable.

the decline of literacy rates also comes down to the fact that people don't want to be challenged and explore the complexities of such issues and it all comes down to a lot of factors but a primary factor is humanity's wired emotional instinct to overpower another and feel 'superior' as themselves instead of giving way to countless other perspectives that would actually help build our society for the top.

the biggest takeaway from Pedagogy of the Oppressed is praxis. Being able to reflect on what we critically analyzed and put it into practice. Calling people NPC for lack of literacy was what Paulo Friere was calling out. Alienating others for lack of understanding. What changes the literacy crisis is dialogue and student-teacher relation. We cannot just be mere thinkers and analyzers of our crisis. We have to be changers, as well.
