ok I looked up the clamshell thoracotomy, it is as fascinating to look at as it is horrifying. My only question is how do you even recover from that

Coded a young man who had a bowel ileus and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced as a nurse. Unfortunately stool will come out one hole or another eventually

I was sharing a room with an elderly woman crying all night for her mum. I tried to do what I saw on MASH and pretended to be her mum. It seemed to calm her down.

The dementia patients who wake up in the middle of the night crying while looking for their infant children (who are now grown adults) is so scary and sad.

My daughter’s assistant teacher was so constipated that she fell trying to go to the bathroom in the hospital and her abdomen literally exploded, her mom (my daughter’s main teacher) who was assisting her per the nurses instructions was covered in feces and held her daughter as she died.

When I was hospitalised the man in the bed opposite me was in because he got into a prison fight. Had to have two officers with him constantly. The thing that scared me was the sight of his jaw hanging off.

I had a bowel obstruction/volvulus when I delivered my son via c section. It was coming out of my nose and mouth even with an NG tube. They kept saying it would get better but after 3 days I tanked and was rushed into emergency surgery. They ended up cutting out over a foot of my intestines. ICU for a few days and then 35 days in the hospital because of complications afterward. I almost died and am still traumatized. It’s been 2 years.

My son was born with gastroschisis. On one of the support forums, a little girl his age (4 at the time) was having stomach pains. Doctors kept sending them home. One night, her parents found her vomiting feces on the bathroom floor. Didn't survive. I'm so paranoid about his having stomach pains even now at 15

I was in ER on a psych hold, and in the room next to me they had a child who was in a car accident, he passes soon after he got there. I still hear the mom screaming all night, I'll never forget that.

I've seen a lot. My weirdest was as a pt. I was sitting in my room, when I lady fell out of my ceiling, like full on fell out of my ceiling. I just calmly hit my nurse button. She had escaped from psych into the ceiling and just had been crawling around. She was ok physically.

Was in hospital after having my daughter and the code blue alarm in the next room went off. The scream from that poor mother as they tried to revive her baby still haunts me.

Had to take my dad to the ER because his heart was giving him trouble (he's good now. While we were sitting there, I could see into one of the trauma bays. They brought in a young man who had been shot and were unable to save him. Just around the corner in the hallway, was another young man with his family. He was talking to them saying they'd taken his brother away to a room, but he hadn't heard anything from them yet. I knew immediately that just a few feet away, there was a horrible truth waiting for them. It's been years since this happened, and I still think about it.

I live in a rural area so our ER is actually divided one side is ER the other is Acute/Urgent Care, nurse's station is in the middle. I'm there for a stomach bug so hooked up on fluids & just vibing in Zofran Land (it makes me sleepy). I suddenly hear an ambulance come in with sirens blasting & then a lot of running & yelling. They had brought in a man having a heart attack. So everybody is working on him. I hear them call for a helicopter to take him to a larger hospital & the nurse comes in to check on me & is apologizing for neglecting me. I tell her no problem I figured it was an emergency & ask if the man is going to make it. She said it was a less than 10% chance. Being there as a person ☠️& listening to it happen was a sobering experience. 🥺🥺
