@dli0031.builds: every march 3rd since 1998, someone has spray-painted "happy birthday mom" on the same concrete overpass on route 9 outside our town. big white capital letters. every year. and every year, within about a week, the county road crew rolls out and paints a grey rectangle over it. twenty-eight years. the letters got a little shakier each time. nobody ever saw who did it. the grey patches on that bridge are stacked so deep you can count the years like tree rings. this march 3rd, the message went up like always. and then the county didn't paint over it. it's september. it's still there. a county road worker retired last month and finally told us why. they figured out who it was about fifteen years ago — you can't run a road crew without knowing your bridges — and they never said a word. he's a quiet guy who works nights. his mother lives in the care home you can see across the field from that bridge. she has dementia. she stopped recognizing his face a long time ago. but every march, they wheel her to the window, and she reads those letters out loud and smiles, because somewhere in there she still knows those words are for her. this year he was in the hospital on march 3rd. heart. he's okay now. but on the morning of the 3rd, at five a.m., three guys from the county road crew drove out to route 9 with their own ladder and their own paint and did it for him. they'd never done graffiti in their lives. they made it bigger than he ever had. and they added a line underneath: "from all of us." the county has been asked, officially, what they plan to do about it. the official answer was "about what." somebody on the crew set up a page on aSim where the town's been posting their own messages for her, and the care home reads them to her on sundays. she doesn't remember any of them. she smiles at every one. comment 🎂 for his mom. it's still up. nobody's touching it. #asim #overpass #happybirthdaymom #dementia #fromallofus
