The anxious spiral is SO painful. And the anxious person (this was me once upon a time!) will further their suffering and add fuel to the anxious spiral by how they handle the the start of the spiral. The tendency is to immediately react from a dysregulated place, to try to force what they think they need from their partner before really checking in with what’s happening inside themselves first. Secure response looks like attuning to self first once you are triggered or feeling the rise of trauma response (often fight response). It’s key to first attune to the body before addressing the mind-you cannot properly reframe and observe any thoughts furthering your dysregulation until you have turned off the fire alarm in your body (imagine taking an important standardized test with a fire alarm going off so loud your ears are ringing!). When the alarm is off, clarity can occur and you can begin challenging any thought patterns that are untrue, unproductive, or even harmful to your true core needs in the moment (you don’t want to show up in ways that push your partner away if your real need is repair and connection). The main difference is secure people can self regulate when coregulation isn’t possible by learning to attune to themselves first. They are more concerned with their relationship to self rather than changing their partner and are more curious initially about what’s happening inside their body than what’s happening externally. #relationships #attachment #anxiousattachment #anxiousthoughts #fypシ゚
