@newyorker: Until 2019, when he attempted to kill one of his students, Michael Barisone was a leading rider and trainer in the horse-handling sport of dressage. Although he was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity—a striking outcome considering he had no history of serious mental illness, and by the end of 2023 he had no such illness, according both to his own account and to the State of New Jersey—Barisone was banned from the sport. “It wasn’t surprising to hear him mourn what he’d lost since shooting someone in the chest twice,” Ian Parker writes. “But it was striking to hear how fiercely he resented having lost anything at all.” In this week’s issue, Parker speaks with Barisone; the student he shot, Lauren Kanarek; and their lawyers, families, and confidantes. They should have locked him up for the way he acted in court. It was insulting.

Clearly the bots in the comments haven’t seen the documentary about this because the woman was **horrible**. It’s shocking that only one person has tried to do that 😳. And I hate that she is so awful that I’m defending a man. 🤮
