In Gospel of John 6, the whole theme is ultimately about the identity of Jesus and who He says He is. Jesus is revealing that He is the One who came down from heaven, the Son of God who gives eternal life. But many people did not understand Him because they were thinking only in earthly and physical terms.
The main issue was not that Jesus was teaching people to literally eat his physical flesh or literally drink his blood. The deeper meaning of his words was about believing in him, receiving him by faith, and trusting the life-giving truth that comes from him.
Jesus repeatedly connects eternal life with believing:
“Whoever believes has eternal life.” (John 6:47)
“The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” (John 6:63)
So when many disciples walked away, it was because they rejected who Jesus claimed to be — the one who came down from heaven, the Son of God who gives eternal life. They could not accept his divine identity because they only saw him as “the son of Joseph.”
But Simon Peter believed. That is why Peter answered:
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
Peter understood that eternal life was found in Jesus and in believing his words. He recognized that Jesus was not merely an ordinary man, but the Holy One of God who came from the Father.
And later in the chapter Jesus explains:
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” (John 6:63)
That statement shows the spiritual focus of the passage. The emphasis is on faith in Christ, receiving him, and believing the truth of who he is — the eternal Word made flesh who came down from heaven to give life to the world.
Jesus often spoke in figurative language, parables, symbols, and spiritual sayings that many people misunderstood because they were thinking only in earthly terms.
In John 6, many listeners interpreted his words physically and literally, but Jesus was speaking about a deeper spiritual reality — believing in him as the one sent from heaven who gives eternal life.
Later, in John 16:29–30, the disciples say to Jesus:
“Now you are speaking plainly and without figures of speech
