One of the most COMMON questions I get asked⬇️: “Yes I know I have to brace my core, but how the heck do I do it???” I talk about this a lot on this page (because it’s important) but let’s start by quickly defining what bracing your core means: It means you are creating something called intra-abdominal pressure, aka breathing air in to assist you in contracting your core musculature while also creating some durability in your centre. I almost like to imagine that I’m creating a “cushioning” around my joints, especially my lower back region. This not only protects your spine but it keeps the movement feeling STRONG not FLIMSY (imagine what a balloon looks like when it’s deflated vs filled with air, when it’s filled with air it’s much more durable) SIDE NOTE: bracing aside, I always start any movement by ensuring my spine is in proper position. Neutral spine means your ribs are stacked over your pelvis (basically think good posture) and it’s the safest position for your spine to be in, especially when you’re lifting heavy. Once you’re in good position, think about SUCKING the air in through your mouth (almost like a “slurp”😂) to really FILL your belly with air and contract your deep core muscles. Then you want to lower down into your squat WHILE maintaining this tension in your core, only exhaling when you’re at least 3/4 of the way up. Then re-set and repeat. I know what you’re thinking, this sounds like it has so many steps attached but trust me, it becomes so intrinsic the more that you practice. If you struggle with “holding the brace” throughout the entire rep- practice practice practice. I also suggest doing some supplementary core work such as dead-bugs/planks to help strengthen your core and better understand the sensation so you can translate it across your lifts. I hope this helps and don’t forget to SHARE it with a friend who struggles to understand how “bracing your core” works🤍 . . . #lowerbackpain #lowerbackpainrelief #howtobraceyourcore #braceyourcore #GymTok #formtipsforbeginners #fitnesstipsforbeginners
