The Arizona-Sonora corridor now ranks 3rd in Mexico for arrests of Americans by the Mexican Army and National Guard, according to Mexican defense data. Official records show 621 U.S. citizens were detained in Sonora between 2012 and February 2025. Only Baja California, with 946, and Tamaulipas, with 645, recorded more. Together, those three border states accounted for about 63% of all cases nationwide. Across Mexico, 3,526 Americans were detained by the Army and National Guard during that period, with more than 80% of the cases occurring since 2018. The highest single-year total came in 2024, when authorities recorded 969 detentions, an average of more than two per day. Experts cited in the underlying reporting say the rise is tied in part to cross-border organized crime and firearms trafficking, with U.S. citizens sometimes recruited because they can obtain weapons in the United States and transport them south. The numbers highlight how the Arizona-Sonora border corridor works in both directions, with Mexican authorities increasingly encountering American citizens on the southbound side of cross-border enforcement. #Arizona #Sonora #ArizonaNews #Mexico #BorderNews
