It’s because it’s not their money, they refund money from the sellers account of the item they sold. They don’t care if the original items comes back. after the refund is issued, It’s for the seller to check and file a complaint if customers don’t return the correct item.

A lot of people forget that Amazon isn’t actually a supplier of anything and the business is running an online marketplace and logistics. They actually save money by just refunding you and a lot of the time not taking the item back
