So I graduated in 2002, that was the end of 55 being considered passing. Then you needed 65 in order to pass out the regents. They need to bring back night school.

I teach Sunday school. Most of my kids are in HS. These kids are soooo not prepared for anything. Most struggle in reading, writing, basic geography, history. So now my class is a bit of everything. What do you mean you don’t know Egypt is in Africa? We were going over the story of Moses and all my kids were dumbfounded. So yes, they’re not prepared. And yes, we went over geography that day. Unless they’re replacing the regents with something else, this is the wrong move in education.

The headline level news is very misleading. A regents diploma will still be a pathway to graduate. They are adding other pathways that basically allow you to choose mini majors that can be obtained through more project based learning and fewer high stakes tests. They’re adding flexibility, not removing accountability.
