I played competitive softball from 9 to 23 and never saw that call being made or used once. That’s pretty wild to see and definitely rare.

3rd base can't obstruct the runner from the running lane that the RUNNER established. (which is dumb if they are going for the ball) 3rd base was outside that established lane. Horrible call for an umpire at that level.

Passing a runner is normally a dead ball out, but if the runner is obstructed, the passing is ignored.

Makes a lot of sense though. Umpire made the right call. Nothing happens after dead ball confirmed matters. You let it play out so if it becomes irrelevant you don’t stop play. It stayed relevant.
