@adrivpo1: HYROX APOLOGIZES AFTER ATHLETE WAS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE COMPETING FOLLOWING DIARRHEA BOWEL ACCIDENT TLDR: Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk experienced diarrhea during a HYROX race in Beijing but was allowed to continue using the indoor course and shared equipment. She ultimately won the women’s pro event. Following widespread sanitation concerns, HYROX admitted officials should have intervened and announced new rules and procedures. HYROX is facing intense criticism after an Australian world-champion athlete was permitted to finish—and win—a race after suffering bowel incontinence during the competition. Joanna Wietrzyk was participating in the women’s pro division at HYROX Beijing on September 12, 2026, when she experienced the medical issue during the race. Photos and videos showed Wietrzyk continuing through the indoor course with visible contamination on her legs. She completed the remaining exercises, which involved portions of the course and equipment also used by other competitors, and finished in first place. The fact that Wietrzyk experienced an involuntary bodily function is not the primary reason the incident created such an uproar. Much of the criticism has focused on why race officials did not step in, pause the competition or remove her from the course once the potential sanitation risk became apparent. HYROX combines running with multiple functional exercise stations, including rowing, sled pushes, burpee broad jumps and wall balls. Because the event is held indoors and competitors use the same equipment, participants questioned whether allowing the race to continue could have exposed others to contaminated surfaces. HYROX China said the affected areas were eventually closed and isolated, equipment was removed, flooring was replaced and the venue underwent extensive disinfection. However, competitors and others following the event questioned why officials did not intervene sooner. HYROX initially explained that it already had procedures addressing medical issues and biological contamination. According to the organization, confusion arose because the protocols governing elite competition and mass-participation events were not clearly distinguished in this situation. Co-founder Moritz Fürste later issued an apology and acknowledged that HYROX had failed to respond appropriately. Fürste said the organization “made a mistake by not reacting immediately during the race” and accepted responsibility for failing to anticipate how such an incident should be handled. HYROX China also acknowledged that its global competition manual did not contain a clear penalty or procedure covering the specific circumstances that unfolded in Beijing. Officials reportedly relied on their prior experience managing elite competitions and allowed Wietrzyk to continue. The organization has now proposed additional regulations addressing extreme physical distress and potential public-health risks. The proposed changes would provide clearer direction concerning intervention by officials, management of the course, pausing a race and determining whether an athlete’s result should stand. HYROX China also announced plans for stronger sanitation measures, including disinfecting venues before events and assigning sanitation teams to clean exercise equipment between competitors. Wietrzyk’s bowel accident was an involuntary medical event and should not be used as justification to threaten or harass her. At the same time, the situation has raised legitimate questions about an organizer’s responsibility to protect every athlete using a shared indoor course. HYROX has not announced that Wietrzyk’s victory will be revoked. The organization says new rules and procedures are now being implemented to prevent another situation like this from occurring.
