I had a patient being discharged and her and her husband were homeless. I noticed they had put the hospital pillows in their bags and I didn’t say anything. Before they left I snuck them a bag with extra blankets, some snacks, and hygiene products. You never know when it could be you.

I remember when I was a brand new nurse I had a homeless man with holes in his sneakers .. it was winter. So I went out and bought him brand new shoes and socks because I felt so bad. He cursed me out when I gave them to him because they weren’t Nike 😬

When I was homeless, I went in to have dental work done and the dentist office had 4 winter coats for me to choose from… they knew I was coming from the homeless shelter and I’ll never forget their kindness

I remember this nurse I had and I had mentioned to her how bad I wanted a real shower, I had only had bed baths because I was paralyzed. She stayed after her shift and found a way with a CNA to give me a real shower and I still remember that act of kindness and it meant so much to me.

I’m so glad I work at a psych unit and have access to a washer and dryer. I always make sure patients’ clothes are clean for them ❤️

I once cared for someone with uncertain housing who had no access to a washing machine. Their room had quite an odor to it so I decided to give them a bath and washed their clothes in the bathroom. Two bars of soap, and three shampoo bottles later their black shorts turned into light green/brown camo shorts. you have to meet people where they're at, and you never know how much something as simple as washing clothes can mean the world to someone

I would absolutely do the same thing. When my daughter lived in San Francisco I would take clothes and leave them in bags with labels of what was in them in areas where I knew there were homeless nearby. Once I had a lot of blankets and pillows I was going to leave. I mentioned to someone that I had made sure to wash everything and bag them separately. They said why? Do you know how filthy they are? I doubt they’d care if they were freshly washed. I replied that for just a moment when they laid their head down I wanted them to smell a fresh clean pillow and blanket. Hopefully it would help them sleep better that night.

When I had a grippy sock vacation and finally got to leave when I put my cloths on I realized they had been washed for me 🥺 I hated the smell of the soap but I loved the kindness of not having to put on dirty cloths I wore a week ago during a breakdown. Thank you for being so kind.

my mother in law worked in a hospital.hospital bigwigs didnt allow patient clothes to be washed in hospital machines. my mother in law would bring some of the patient clothes home and wash them at her house and take then back.all for a CNA pay of 10 bucks an hr.

Its important to distinguish what is your job as an employee of tbe hospital and what is just basic human kindness. I would do this because I'm kind, not because it's my job.

Had a patient with manic depression come in after a long depressive episode. She had mattes in her hair and very long toe nails (curling in, close to the skin). They told me to leave it alone. I brought in a bottle of conditioner, shampoo, and nail clippers and a file. She left with no mattes and a fresh pedicure. I have no regrets.

When I was put in the psych ward I couldn’t sleep because how bad my anxiety was, a nurse would take my blanket run it through the dryer so it was warm and give me warm milk. I loved that nurse so much

I remember my absolute angel of a nurse; I was actively miscarrying & had bled through my underwear onto my pj pants, she hand washed my clothes in the sink😢 she was so sweet & helped me so much. I hope she’s doing well

I worked as a nursing assistant in Brooklyn when I was a nursing student. I was in the ED and an unhoused man came in with head lice. They gave him quell shampoo and discharged him. How was he going to shampoo his head? I gave him a wash and picked what I could out of his head before he left.

& I definitely would’ve went to Walmart on my break and would’ve bought a clean pack of black tshirts just so he could have more than one shirt lol . I don’t know what’s happening in healthcare but we need more people like you that have human kindness and compassion

my hospital has a washer and dryer on the psych unit. if we call and explain the situation, they let us use it for folks who need it

not a nurse but I work at a gas station and we let homeless people use our restrooms to take a sink bath and we give away food and drinks when we can
