On the morning of February 24, 2005, Mark discovered that Jessica was missing from her bedroom. For three weeks, he searched for her and pleaded for his daughter to come home. Then investigators found her body. John Evander Couey, a convicted sex offender who lived near the Lunsford family, was later convicted in Jessica’s death. But the case did not end with a conviction. Mark became an advocate for stronger protections for children and better tracking and notification of convicted sex offenders. In 2005, Florida enacted the Jessica Lunsford Act, strengthening penalties for certain offenses against children and expanding monitoring and registration requirements. Mark later testified before Congress about failures he believed had contributed to Jessica’s death. Not as a headline. As his daughter.
