⚠️ SAD UPDATE: DISCUSSION OF ANIMAL DEATH ⚠️ Well, legends, unfortunately we lost the young kangaroo that was found down in a neighbouring paddock with a badly injured ankle. That injury had obviously been troubling him for quite some time. Whether it was serious damage or an infection within the joint, it appeared to have restricted his movement to the point where he could no longer get around and feed himself properly. By the time we got to him, he was severely malnourished, severely dehydrated and quite literally skin and bone. He was so weak that he could no longer stand by himself. We brought him home, gave him pain relief and hydration, and settled him into a warm, quiet and comfortable space with food and water. Unfortunately, I think his body was already past the point of being able to recover. His organs appeared to be shutting down, and from the appearance of his urine, I was concerned that his kidneys may no longer have been functioning properly. We found him on Saturday afternoon and had planned to get him veterinary assistance on Monday if we could get him through the weekend—but sadly, he didn’t even make it through that first night. He passed away during the night. I would have loved to know exactly what had happened to his ankle and what caused him to deteriorate so badly, but he had clearly been struggling for a long time to lose that much condition. The saddest part was that he was only a young male with his whole life ahead of him. A massive shout-out to the neighbouring farmer who spotted him, knew something wasn’t right and called us in to help. She loves the wildlife that moves between our properties and made sure he wasn’t left lying alone and suffering in the paddock. We couldn’t save him, but at least his final hours were spent somewhere warm, safe and comfortable. Unfortunately, legends, this is part of wildlife rescue too. You can give them every chance possible, but sometimes help arrives just a little too late.
