this tokyo bar is my MOST closely guarded secret... This is what Tetsu told me when I asked him about his life (translated from Japanese): "I opened Bar Zazie 24 years ago. Before that, I lived in Hong Kong for seven years. I returned to Japan at age 35, worked in Sapporo for six months and Singapore for six months, then opened Bar Zazie in Nakano, Tokyo at 36. While living in Hong Kong I worked at a trading company, but I realized I wasn’t suited to Japanese corporate culture, so after coming back to Japan I decided to run my own place. My thinking was: try it for three years, and if it doesn’t work out, go back to trade. Before I knew it, 24 years had passed. During that time I got married, had two children, and went through a divorce eight years ago. I studied Chinese at university, so in Hong Kong I worked in Chinese — but I couldn’t speak English. Over the past two years or so, Zazie has seen a growing number of foreign customers, both residents of Japan and tourists. That inspired me to want to connect with them in English, so six months ago I started studying English seriously every day. I’m grateful to the many foreigners who were kind to me during my Hong Kong years, and I want to show that same kindness to people who come to Japan — to understand each other in as many ways as possible. To me, that is the diverse, inclusive world I believe in: Diversity. There are people in Japan and America alike who speak in exclusionary terms, but I oppose that. I want to get along with all kinds of people, to understand what we can understand, and to learn about our differences where we can’t — and to respect one another. I want to foster mutual understanding. That’s why I started studying English at 60. And going forward, I want to keep running Zazie as a place where not only Japanese people but people from all over the world can come together and connect." #japan #japantrip #japantravel
