@drdeborahparenting: When your child refuses dinner, it can feel like you have to persuade, negotiate, or prepare something else just to keep the meal moving. Here's what to do instead. Serve one meal. Say: "This is dinner. You can choose what you want from your plate." Give dinner a clear window. Set a timer for 15 to 25 minutes. Keep the meal available during that time and continue with dinner as planned. If your child throws food or keeps leaving the table, end their participation in the meal. When the timer goes off, end dinner and clear the table. Serve food again at the next planned meal or snack. Now your child learns how dinner works. You decide what is served. They decide what they eat from what is available. The meal has a clear beginning and end. If you want a clear system for mealtimes, get the Parenting OS. For a child to act like that it’s because he has learned it gets him what he wants. That behavior comes from parents letting act that way before.

guarantee half of you in the comments that are saying that my child goes hungry or they eat what they are given are not actually doing that to their kids.

Being choosy is ok. The screaming and crying is not. Teaching opportunity here for emotional regulation and effective communication.

This is a good plan. It gives structure to how we, as millennials, were raised. I got “that’s dinner whether you like it or not. You’re going to sit there until you eat.” It turns dinner from punishment into structure. I like it.
