If you’re constantly dropping full PDFs into Claude Code, you’re feeding it a lot more information than it actually needs. A 20 page document with text, formatting and images can consume a huge amount of context before Claude has even started doing the actual work. There’s a much cleaner workflow. Microsoft has an open source project called MarkItDown that converts PDFs and other documents into Markdown. Instead of making Claude process the original document every time, you can convert it first and give the model a much cleaner, text focused representation of the information. That means less unnecessary context, more room for the actual task and potentially much longer Claude Code sessions before you need to compact. And this is something I think people underestimate about AI coding. You don’t always need a more expensive model or a bigger context window. Sometimes you just need to be smarter about what you put into it. Optimize the input first. Then let Claude do the expensive part. Follow me for more Claude Code workflows like this.
