Honestly Ash’s whole life was one nightmare after another. He lived his entire life on edge , constantly looking over his shoulder. Killing to stay alive. He knew no matter how much he loved Eiji, how much his life changed because he met him, he was never going to be free of the pain life inflicted. Even if he went to Japan , what would his life look like? Always afraid? Always looking over his shoulder? He died on his own terms. Never to be used or abused by anyone again. Holding onto the love they shared, the only pure thing in his life that not even he could taint. 🤧💔

Ash would've never been able to speak freely if it wasn't for Eiji as he was silenced his whole life by those around him. He knew that the library would be a peaceful slience where words written on paper spoke louder than actual voices. With this logic, its like Eiji himself was talking to him even though his words were written down. Eiji made it possible for Ash to feel a want to feel free even with everything going on around them. With or without Eiji, Ash would've believed its better to die as he would've thought about what his purpose in life was if no one allowed him to be himself, so death was the only way Ash was able to feel the freedom he always had restricted.

nobody talks about ash's courageousness. he chose time and time again, after skip, after griffin, after shorter, after the times he was t/rtured, r/ped, and ab/sed, after the times max, ibe, sing, others, and most importantly eiji's lives and livelihoods were threatened, to keep searching, to keep looking for answers and justice for not just himself but most importantly for all the v/ctims of both the government and the mafia's release of banana fish and the v/ctims of the mafia's tr/fficking ring. when ash was in the hospital, he told charlie that there was no point in looking for justice against dino for the tr/fficking ring because he believed dino was too wealthy to be punished. but over time, regardless of it meant the entire government and mafia coming after him, he began really researching banana fish, and later, he released the evidence of the mafia's ring. after meeting eiji, he spent every day of his life on the run. not once could he catch a break because of his investigation. but he continued. he thought it was better to die before he met eiji. after, he realized it was better to speak. only did he rest and die when he had done all he could. ash is such an amazing symbol of perseverance and will.

Ash chose this path, that it is better to die, as he recognised that his voice ultimately didn't shine or matter in a society that ignored his struggles and denied the security he had always longed for. Eiji came into his life, but he was only a temporary sanctuary; Ash could never dare let Eiji get too heavily involved in the chaotic mess people called a life of his. He knew he had been silenced his entire life by everyone and anyone. Because of this, he felt compelled to seek out a library in his final moments - a place where silence is universally advised, but not necessary if you are whispering. Ash couldn't even utter whispers in the outside world without being targeted; he had to think so quietly, because somehow his thoughts always escaped and were weaponised against him as spoken words. Yet, both Eiji and Ash chose freedom in their own distinct ways. Eiji chose a geographical freedom, escaping what could be defined as fearful and full of dread to finally return home. Ash chose a completely different kind of freedom. He chose a library, a space where there is freedom of every kind - whether in the words around you, the seat you sit in, who you choose to sit by, or even what you read. Within that sanctuary, he could finally feel free, something he was never allowed to be. A final smile crept onto his face seconds before death. It wasn't forced, controlled, or mocked; it was the very first genuine smile to himself, found when he was completely alone. Ultimately, Eiji was the person who defined and taught him what freedom was, leaving an indelible imprint that allowed Ash to experience true autonomy in his final breath, even as he faced the end entirely by himself.
