Just FYI, you don't regret cutting off a toxic parent just because they die. You grieve losing them and the relationship you should have had long before that.

The hardest realization for others to understand is when you're mourning a parent who is still alive.

That's the trap though...I had a "friend" yell at me because I cut off my brother (abusive, addicted) because She had a wonderful brother who she loved deeply...who died. She said I should cherish every moment because you never know. Not all relationships are the same. You cant copy paste your relationships over someone else's

Why do people always assume someone's mother is a good person just because they are a mother?

My sister and I would always say 'no one can be sicker than mom'. Any time either of us would get sick, we'd call our mom to tell her and she always had it worst. Example-If I got a sinus infection, she had a stomach bug. My sister had a asthma attack and mom said her knee was popping out of place. My mom passed away 2 years ago and my sister and I said- she finally won! No one is sicker than her being dead 😂

I was a hospice social worker for 5 years. I encountered all different kinds of family dynamics. I would tell myself regularly that I’m coming into the equation at the end, after a lifetime of family dynamics at play. It wasn’t necessary that I agreed with how people handled things, it was just necessary I remembered there’s so much more to the story than what I’m seeing. End of life does not change years, decades, a lifetime of hurt someone may have inflicted. I agree with the possible regret but I think most people who come to that point understand the risk as well.

those who aren't nc don't understand we already mourned them. they may as well be d*ad, so an illness really doesn't have an effect on the outcome of this.

This takes on so many forms… we are more bound by our own perspective and perception that it is quite difficult to understand how someone could have a justified different world view.

I fell for this. Not cancer but a medical emergency. The expectation that everything would reset was absolutely real.

She’s right. If it’s not what you want, why aren’t you trying to fix the relationship while you’re well while you’re healthy? Why does it have to wait until someone’s sick?

I end up telling people “I’m so glad your mom is so good to you that you can’t even fathom a situation where my reaction makes sense. I wish I had that too.”

I find it super insulting when someone says you’ll regret going NC. Like it hasn’t been extensively thought about prior to making this decision. Unless the diagnosis is a brain tumour that impacted your behavior/personality, leave me alone

My response to my brother when he says that, “I’ve been trying to get our mothers attention my entire life until the day I chose not to contact. My nightmares are me waking up my household screaming for her to help me. She never has in real or in my nightmares. Why would I ever return to a relationship where our mother sacrifices me over and over no matter how much I scream, beg cry, or bargain?”
